Did you know? May is named after Maia, the goddess of the spring to the ancient Greeks and Romans. The Anglo-Saxons called this month Thrimilce (three times milking) because cows could be milked three times a day after feeding on the rich May grass! For the ancient Celtic people, the first of May was the first day of summer.

Activity Two: The price of art

A Picasso painting became the most expensive picture in the world when it sold for more than $104 million at an auction in New York this month. Picasso painted Boy with a Pipe when he was 24 and it is considered to be the best of his Rose Period paintings. The boy in the picture, whose name was Louis, used to hang around Picasso's studio in Paris.

With Picasso making headlines, and Salvador Dalí's centenary on May 11, why not take another look at our online art activities. Magazine subscribers will find the activities at the its-magazines site. Newsletter subscribers can fill the gaps in 10 things you should know about Salvador Dalí.

TXTNG

A new kind of English has emerged: Texting (or txtng) via mobile/cell phone is now a major form of communication for millions of kids around the globe. In this practical activity, Gavin Dudeney looks at motivating ways to exploit this phenomenon in the classroom (and no, you don’t have to know how it all works, and it won’t cost you a penny!)..
